Butaalunga is in the Butambala district of Uganda and is located about 45 miles west of Kampala, the capital city.
Butambala district is a local government; one of the four districts of Gomba, Mpigi, Wakiso and Butambala, which were cut from the Greater Mpigi in 2010.
It is neighboured by the districts of Mpigi in the north, Gomba in the south, Mityana in the west and Kalungu in the south. Butambala has 142 villages divided into 25 parishes.
With a population of about 110,000 people, this small district has two town councils and four sub counties. Ginger is the main crop of Butambala and therefore cultivating ginger is the predominant activity in the area. Coffee growing and cultivating has begun to grow rapidly in the recent years.
Politically, Butambala and therefore Butaalunga is included in the turmoil surrounding the recent January’s elections. At 81 years old, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was reelected for a seventh term in office. Unsurprising, considering the allegations of fraud, post election violence and especially repression of the opposition. In 1986, Museveni came to power after the National Revolutionary Army seized Kampala following a five-year guerrilla war. The authoritarian regime has lasted for more than four decades.
